Bengali Student Organization
at the University of Virginia
The Bengali Student Organization is a student-run organization which serves to educate and bring together members of the UVA community who are interested in and/or directly affiliated with the culture and experiences of Bengal, a region encompassing both the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. BSO also serves to bring attention to issues that affect the Bengal region including but not limited to: poverty, economic instability, human rights, environmental concerns, inequality, racial and religious strife, and the current Rohingya refugee crisis. It is important to emphasize that BSO will not promote any specific religious or political views. We aim to be an inclusive, unbiased organization, with our sole goal to teach others the Bengali culture/language.
BSO @ UVA turns 5 this year!
Our organization began as a group chat consisting of students eager to connect over sharing Bengali culture and community. In 2021, we officially gained CIO status, allowing the organization to expand our presence on Grounds. BSO is a welcoming space for students of all backgrounds and continues to serve as a cultural, social, and educational outlet centered around the Bengali diaspora for members of both the UVA and wider Charlottesville communities. Since 2021, we have grown into a vibrant and dynamic organization committed to furthering our mission statement.
